GE Energy Financial Services has announced it is making a $65 million investment in the construction of an Oklahoma wind farm capable of generating 152 megawatts of green energy.

The CPV Keenan II wind farm in Woodward, Oklahoma will be constructed by the CPV Renewable Energy Company, which is an affiliate of Competitve Power Ventures Inc and will cost an estimated $319 million.

GE Energy's $65 million investment, which has an option to increase to $100 based on the commencement of future commercial operations, will be joined by $212 million in a secured credit facility from The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and Union Bank.

Once completed, the wind farm is expected to generate enough solar energy to power 45,000 homes and cut 413,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually

"CPV REC is focused on building a bridge to a better energy future through the development of leading-edge projects like Keenan II and working with forward-looking companies like GE," said Sean Finnerty, senior vice president of CPV REC.

GE Energy Financial Services currently invests in 47 wind farms across the country that can generate up to 6 gigawatts of green energy. They also hold loans on 36 other wind farms that generate up to 1.3 gigawatts.

The proposal would trade labs seen as benefiting white students for resources to help struggling minority students.

Berkeley High School is considering a controversial proposal to eliminate science labs and the five science teachers who teach them to free up more resources to help struggling students.

The proposal to put the science-lab cuts on the table was approved recently by Berkeley High’s School Governance Council, a body of teachers, parents, and students who oversee a plan to change the structure of the high school to address Berkeley’s dismal racial achievement gap, where white students are doing far better than the state average while black and Latino students are doing worse.

Paul Gibson, an alternate parent representative on the School Governance Council, said that information presented at council meetings suggests that the science labs were largely classes for white students. He said the decision to consider cutting the labs in order to redirect resources to underperforming students was virtually unanimous.

Science teachers were understandably horrified by the proposal. “The majority of the science department believes that this major policy decision affecting the entire student body, the faculty, and the community has been made without any notification, without a hearing,” said Mardi Sicular-Mertens, the senior member of Berkeley High School’s science department, at last week’s school board meeting.

Sincular-Mertens, who has taught science at BHS for 24 years, said the possible cuts will impact her black students as well. She says there are twelve African-American males in her AP classes and that her four environmental science classes are 17.5 percent African American and 13.9 percent Latino. “As teachers, we are greatly saddened at the thought of losing the opportunity to help all of our students master the skills they need to find satisfaction and success in their education,” she told the board.

The full plan to close the racial achievement gap by altering the structure of the high school is known as the High School Redesign. It will come before the Berkeley School Board as an information item at its January 13 meeting. Generally, such agenda items are passed without debate, but if the school board chooses to play a more direct role in the High School Redesign, it could bring the item back as an action item at a future meeting.

School district spokesman Mark Coplan directed inquiries about the redesign to Richard Ng, the principal’s assistant at Berkeley High and member of the School Governance Council. Ng did not return repeated calls for comment.

Stargate Atlantis needs our help! Sign the petition!

I’m such a fan of Stargate Atlantis. I watch it religiously and I know all the scenes! It’s in my system and I just can’t imagine life without this show on TV. Have you heard? MGM has already announced that they are going to end the show after their 5th season. Why? It’s probably the best sci-fi show on TV to date! Why cancel a show that has a very solid audience that watches it religiously the same as I do?

Obviously, the producers know how popular Stargate Atlantis is and thought that it’s just too good for TV and should be made into a movie. Great! Who wouldn’t want to watch a movie version of their favorite sci-fi TV series? But why would they cancel the show just to pave the way for its movie series? There’s too much here and the purpose is not to benefit the fans but so they could fatten their pockets even more! Come on now! Why hurt us after we supported your show? It is just not fair!

I am so happy to see many fans who decided to start a petition. It’s a great idea! It’s time for us to save our favorite TV show. Let us save Atlantis! It’s our time to be a part of the show’s story. Now is our time to save Atlantis, Of course it’s not like we have to pack our bags and train to be one of these futuristic scientists but it’s time for us to unite and save the show! These petitions are calling for all the Stargate Atlantis fans and supporters to sign their names so our voices would be heard by SGA’s executive producers. It’s not fair! We have to show them that what they plan on doing is really not fair!

Friday nights would no longer be fun. I usually prepare myself after dinner and find a comfortable place in front of the TV in anticipation of this show. I look forward to Friday nights all the time! Without SGA, what’s there to look forward to? It’s sad… tragic! Looking forward for the next movie is like waiting for your birthday each year!

I’m just one of the many disappointed fans of SGA. These executive producers should reconsider. Should we boycott and show them our disappointment? But then we’d be missing more of their awesome shows. We should all support the circulating of the online petition asking for these executive producers to change their mind and start thinking about the 6th season. The 5th season of Stargate Atlantis is a lot better than the previous seasons and we are expecting for the 6th. It can’t just end here. It’s just too good to end.

SciFi will have nothing to boast about after their station won’t have Stargate Atlantis for their audience. Come on now, what’s left to watch in that channel after SGA?

Would it have been different if they have used a different channel to show Stargate Atlantis? SG1 was a great show and it was canceled prematurely as well. I was a die-hard fanatic of SG1 also and I was so disappointed when they announced that my favorite show on TV was about to say it’s goodbye. I was sad but I thank God for Stargate Atlantis. At least, SG1 had 10 seasons so I was able to enjoy watching it for years! Stargate Atlantis only had 5 episodes and it’s even better than SG1 but why only 5 episodes? Can the executive producers answer this question for us?

Why the sudden death for our favorite sci-fi shows? They can cancel all those other boring shows on Sci-Fi if they want to, but why cancel the most popular one? It doesn’t really make sense to me. I will miss the characters whom I already grown to love. What will happen to them after this? Will they be on the movie version of Stargate Atlantis? I hope so. But, still that’s just not right. They deserve to be on Air every Friday! I am not saying that they don’t deserve to be on the silver screen. Heck, I’d die to watch the movie version of SGA but I just can’t stand the fact that they are canceling the show.

I’m sure many would agree that there’s not much on TV right now that is worth watching. I don’t watch TV on most days except for the news and some sports shows but that’s just about it. No new shows interest me that much anymore except for Stargate Atlantis. I’m a sucker for sci-fi shows but I am very choosy as well. Sci-fi shows can be really boring when the storyline is boring. SGA has an awesome storyline that caught me right from the first time I watched it. I even have DVDs of the shows so I could watch them over and over again. I’m a die hard fan and I am here, asking all of you die hard SGA fans out there, to support the online petition. Please, please, let’s support our favorite show.

I’m done voicing out my opinion but I’m still not through with my disappointment and I will continue to fight for my favorite show. Its one great show that we just have to keep on air. Whether or not we’d be successful, at least we can say that we did our part in keeping it on air. If the executive producers won’t listen to our plight, I bet it’s time for us to start looking for other shows that may interest us and just wait for the movie series then. It’s unfair and disappointing but I will never say never. I will sign as many online petitions and start a petition asking my fellow fans to support our loved team of scientists led by Major John Sheppard.

You gave us a great show SCI-Fi, please don’t just take it away from us. It will break many hearts and will disappoint even more. Hope you’ll make the right decision and keep the show on air!

piebald mon.jpg

On
April 17-19, beloved indie favorite Piebald closed out their 12+ year
existence with three final shows at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA
and the Bowery Ballroom in New York City.  Piebald teamed up with Rock
‘n Renew to make this sold-out final tour a memorable event that
reflected the band’s long-time green ethics.  As drummer Luke Garro
explained, “These events were more than your typical live show. The
goal was to create a unique experience that was as entertaining as it
was educational.”

The band donated $1 from every ticket sale
to Rock ‘n Renew, and the event included an eco-fashion show each night
to entertain the fans. This unusual show featured karaoke singers
(selected from posted youtube audition tapes) decked out in
sustainably-made clothing and shoes from ethical brands Topo Ranch,
Autonomie Project, Birdhead, and Macbeth.

The founding members
of Piebald — lead singer/guitarist Travis Shettel, guitarist/vocalist
Aaron Stuart and bassist/vocalist Andrew Bonner — cut their teeth while
still in high school in the suburbs of Andover, Massachusetts, debuting
with the 1995 EP, Sometimes Friends Fight.  The band was joined in 2001
by drummer Luke Garro, and recorded many well-received releases
throughout its fruitful career, including When Life Hands You Lemons
(1997), If It Weren't For Venetian Blinds It Would Be Curtains For Us
All (1999), The Rock Revolution Will Not Be Televised (2000), We Are
The Only Friends We Have (2002), All Ears, All Eyes, All The Time
(2004) and Accidental Gentlemen (2007). For those that missed the
shows, the entire event and live set will be released as a DVD
documentary and live CD next fall on Boston labels Sidehatch
Entertainment/Bampf!.

Throughout the band’s existence, Piebald
executed numerous US tours in a bus that ran on 100% straight vegetable
oil (SVO), avoiding petroleum and saving significant money on band
transportation costs.  These tours were accompanied with an alternative
energy education campaign and live demonstrations of the vehicle to
encourage fans and other bands to take action.  Rock ‘n Renew would
like to thank Piebald for their commitment to the environment, their
support for Rock ‘n Renew, and for producing great music for over a
decade.

In the hot sun at the all-day Download Festivals, Rock ‘n Renew encouraged the crowd to help the earth stay cool.  Thousands of fans attended the festivals to see musical acts Modest Mouse, the Shins, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Snoop Dogg, and others.  Teaming up with the NRDC, Rock ‘n Renew handed out over  canvas bags to concert-goers in Boston and Chicago.  (Click here to see video of the bag giveaway and the crowd’s response.)  Fans were given paints, stencils and markers and personalized their bags with creative, humorous, and beautiful designs.  We reminded each fan that plastic bags take 12 million barrels of oil to make annually and that 100 billion plastic bags are thrown away in the US each year.  We asked them to use their new canvas bag instead:  at the convenience store, the supermarket, the book or music store—anywhere they could avoid putting yet another plastic bag into our already choked system.  Rock ‘n Renew founder Jonny Dubowsky also led a Q & A session with Adam Gardner from Guster, continuing our efforts to bring musicans and their fans together to promote environmental change.

On Super Tuesday, Rock ‘n Renew was asked to help make Barack Obama’s
California Primary Day Rally a sustainable and successful event.  Held
at the Avalon Ballroom, across the street from Capitol Records in
Hollywood, the event welcomed 1,500 campaign supporters who gathered to
watch the results and celebrate their hard work on the campaign.  In
between addresses from leading California politicians and VIPs, guests
viewed election returns, enjoyed music and cocktails, and had their
photo taken in a booth specially designed for the event.

Rock
‘n Renew had the opportunity to speak to the large group of press
assembled at the event about the importance of environmental
initiatives and the need for every political candidate to address the
issue of global warming.  And, as always, we helped the crowd rock…and
renew.
